Dao De Ching Chapter 14 - Muller

14. Look for it, it cannot be seen...

Look for it, it cannot be seen.
It is called the distant.
Listen for it, it cannot be heard.
It is called the rare.
Reach for it, it cannot be gotten.
It is called the subtle.

These three ultimately cannot be fathomed.
Therefore they join to become one.
  • Its top is not bright;
  • Its bottom is not dark;
  • Existing continuously, it cannot be named and it returns to nothingness.
Thus, it is called the formless form,
The image of no-thing.

This is called the most obscure.

Go to meet it, you cannot see its face.
Follow it, you cannot see its back.

By holding to the ancient Way
You can manage present existence
And know the primordial beginning.

This is called the very beginning thread of the Way

14 ― Arthur Waley

Because the eye gazes but can catch no glimpse of it,
It is called elusive.
Because the ear listens but cannot hear it,
It is called the rarefied.
Because the hand feels for it but cannot find it,
It is called the infinitesimal.
These three, because they cannot be further scrutinized,
Blend into one,
  • Its rising brings no light;
  • Its sinking, no darkness.
Endless the series of things without a name
On the way back to where there is nothing.
They are called shapeless shapes;
Forms without form;
Are called vague semblance.
Go towards them, and you can see no front;
Go after them, and you see no rear.
Yet by seizing on the Way that was
You can ride the things that are now.
For to know what once there was, in the Beginning,
This is called the essence of the Way.

道德經第十二章

五色令人目盲;
五音令人耳聾;
五味令人口爽;
馳騁田獵,令人心發狂;
難得之貨,令人行妨。
是以聖人為腹不為目,故去彼取此。

Dao De Jing Chapter Twelve — Muller

12. The five colours blind our eyes...

The five colours blind our eyes.
The five tones deafen our ears.
The five flavours confuse our taste.
Racing and hunting madden our minds.
Possessing rare treasures brings about harmful behaviour.

Therefore the sage regards his centre and not his eyes.
He lets go of that and chooses this.

13. Accept humiliation as a surprise...

Accept humiliation as a surprise.
Value great misfortune as your own self.

What do I mean by "Accept humiliation as a surprise"?
When you are humble
Attainment is a surprise
And so is loss.
That's why I say, "Accept humiliation as a surprise."

What do I mean by "Value great misfortune as your own self"?
If I have no self, how could I experience misfortune?
Therefore, if you dedicate your life for the benefit of the world,
You can rely on the world.

If you love dedicating yourself in this way,
You can be entrusted with the world

13. (Loathing shame) James Legge

Favour and disgrace would seem equally to be feared; honour and great calamity, to be regarded as personal conditions (of the same kind).
What is meant by speaking thus of favour and disgrace?
Disgrace is being in a low position (after the enjoyment of favour). The getting that (favour) leads to the apprehension (of losing it), and then losing it leads to the fear of (still greater calamity) - this is what is meant by saying that favour and disgrace would seem equally to be feared. And what is meant by saying that honour and great calamity are to be (similarly) regarded as personal conditions? What makes me liable to great calamity is my having the body (which I call myself); if I had not the body, what great calamity could come to me? Therefore he who would administer the kingdom, honouring it as he honours his own person, may be employed to govern it, and he who would administer it with the love which he bears to his own person may be entrusted with it.

Dao De Jing Chapter 11 — Muller

三十輻,共一轂,當其無,有車之用。
埏埴以為器,當其無,有器之用。
鑿戶牖以為室,當其無,有室之用。
故有之以為利,無之以為用。

11. Thirty spokes join together in the hub...

Thirty spokes join together in the hub.
It is because of what is not there that the cart is useful.
Clay is formed into a vessel.
It is because of its emptiness that the vessel is useful.
Cut doors and windows to make a room.
It is because of its emptiness that the room is useful.
Therefore, what is present is used for profit.
But it is in absence that there is usefulness.

Vertebrae Regions
The 33 vertebrae are separated into five regions and are referred to by specific vertebrae numbers.
Each category of vertebrae has a specific function in the body.
Cervical Spine
The cervical spine has seven vertebrae, which are numbered from C1 through C7.
It is incredibly flexible, and it supports the head.
Thoracic Spine
The thoracic spine has 12 vertebrae, which are numbered from T1 through T12.
It provides attachments for the rib cage and provides stability for the upper body.
Lumbar Spine
The lumbar spine has 5 vertebrae, which are numbered from L1 through L5.
The lumbar vertebrae are the largest bones in the spinal column & support a great deal of body weight.
Sacrum
The sacrum has five bones, which are fused together in adults and are numbered S1 through S5.
It connects the spine to the hipbones.
Coccyx
The coccyx usually has four bones, which are fused in adults and are often called the tailbone.

Ryokan, too lazy to be ambitious

Favourite Ryokan’s Kanshi 漢詩 or Chinese poems.

This translation was used in the front matter of World of Dust on the dedication page:

生涯懶立身
騰騰任天真
囊中三升米
炉辺一束薪
誰問迷悟跡
何知名利塵
夜雨草菴裡
雙腳等閒伸

Too lazy to be ambitious,
I gradually left it all up to fate.
In the sack, three handfuls of rice.
By the stove, one bundle of firewood.
Who cares about delusion and enlightenment?
What use is fame and wealth in the world of dust?
Inside my hut, the evening rain on the thatch,
Both legs stretched out in idleness.

I used this poem to show the use of the phrase ‘world of dust’, referring to ‘this world’, in Chinese and Japanese hermit poetry. In the sixth line the character Chen 塵, ‘dust’, appears on its own, but it is synonymous with Chenshi 塵世, ‘world of dust’ or ‘dust of the world’. It means the world has no stability, it is a transient illusion, everything will return to the dust and so it is only so much dust right now.

The original inspiration to title the book this way came from a line in the verse of trigraph #41 in the Lingqijing: ‘Gathering edible roots and pine nuts, I cut off the world of dust’ (采蕨餐松絕世塵). Here the two characters ‘world’ (世) and ‘dust’ (塵) appear the other way round. The ‘edible roots’ are literally ‘bracken’, but it was the rhizome that was eaten. Pine nuts and edible roots were the main sources of sustenance for mountain hermits. Trigraph #41 concerns ‘the four white-haired old men of Mount Shang’, four sages who fled the despotic rule of Shi Huangdi, the ‘First Emperor’. They lived as hermits on Mount Shang, cutting off the ‘world of dust’ of their former life as government officials.

The original use of ‘dust’ with this connotation appears to be in Daodejing 4 (and 56, which has the same phrase). Speaking of the Dao itself, this chapter says it ‘softens the light, and becomes one with the world of dust’ (和其光同其塵). The believed-in world, when it loses its harsh glare and is seen in a softer light, is none other than the ever-changing appearance of the unchanging Dao.

In Ryokan’s poem, the ‘three handfuls’ of rice is three litres or three standard scoops, but as Ryokan obtained his rice from villagers and farmers putting small amounts in his begging bowl I imagine the rough measure is more like what he could hold by cupping his hands to draw some from his storage sack. Three of those. Ryokan’s hut was on Mount Kumami (熊見山, Kumami-Yama) located in the Hidaka Mountains,日高山脈, Hidaka-sanmyaku, Hokkaidō, 北海道, in Japan, where he lived alone for 26 years. Many of his poems describe both his joy and his loneliness in living there, wherein the winter he was cut off for months by deep snow and found it hard to find enough food since he could not get down the slopes to beg nor could wellwishers bring food to him.

X 33 "Steps" is changing to "Retreat"

Say thirty-three
Cross thirty-three

Ԑx3
X
Ԑ3

Hexagram 10 is named 履 (lǚ), "Treading" or "treading (conduct)" and "continuing".
  • Its inner (lower) trigram is ☱ (兌 duì) open = (澤) swamp
  • Its outer (upper) trigram is ☰ (乾 qián) force = (天) heaven.
Hexagram 33 is named 遯 (dùn), "Retiring" or "retreat" and "yielding".
  • Its inner trigram is ☶ (艮 gèn) bound = (山) mountain
  • Its outer trigram is ☰ (乾 qián) force = (天) heaven.
The meaning of hexagram #10
This simple looking hexagram relates to circumstances that might be inherently risky. In most cases treading in dangerous places is inadvisable. At this time, however, there is very little danger. It is written in the ancient Book of Changes that "One steps on the tail of a tiger at his or her own risk" but the appearance of this hexagram suggests that right now such an act would be ignored (or even seen as playful). A more general reference here could be a mingling of people belonging to different social backgrounds. This sign is typically positive.

履

10. Lü

Treading (Conduct)

The name of the hexagram means on the one hand the right way of conducting oneself. Heaven, the father, is above, and the lake, the youngest daughter, is below. This shows the difference between high and low, upon which composure correct social conduct, depends. On the other hand, the word for the name of the hexagram, Treading, means literally treading upon (empiéter sur) something. The small and cheerful兌treads upon the large and strong乾. The direction of movement of the two primary trigrams is upward. The fact that the strong treads on the weak are not mentioned in the Book of Changes, because it is taken for granted. For the weak to take a stand against the strong is not dangerous here, because it happened in good humour兌and without presumption, so that the strong man is not irritated but takes it all in good part.

The sequence:
When beings are subjected to restraint the mores arise; hence there follows the hexagram of Conduct.

Miscellaneous notes:
That which treads does not stay.

Appended judgments:
Treading shows the basis of character.
It brings about harmonious conduct.

This hexagram is the inverse of the preceding one. The movement of the two primary trigrams is upward, hence the idea that one strides behind the other. The youngest daughter walks behind the father.

the Judgment:

履虎尾,不咥人,亨。

Treading.
Treading upon the tail of the tiger.
It does not bite the man. Success.

Commentary on the Decision:

履,柔履刚也。说而应乎乾,是以履虎尾,不咥人,亨。
刚中正,履帝位而不疚,光明也。

Treading: the yielding treads upon the firm.
Joyous, and in the relationship of correspondence to the Creative; hence, “Treading upon the tail of the tiger. It does not bite the man. Success.”
Strong, central, and correct, he treads into the place of the ruler and remains without blame: his light shines bright.

Changing line #1
"Conduct as Usual"- A change in this line at the base of this hexagram is an indication that the best course of action at this time is the course that is most typically followed. While there are unknowns in the present situation, a familiarity with the tried and true looks especially helpful at this time.

Changing line #2
"Perseverance of the Solitary Soul"- The path is long and difficult. A change in this line indicates that one who is removed from daily interaction, and quietly focuses on the task at hand will be successful. Being true to oneself is indicated here, along with a warning not to be distracted by social pressure.

Changing line #3
"A One-Eyed Man Still Sees"- This changing line near the middle of the hexagram is a reminder that the capacity to do something adequately is very different from the capacity to succeed at doing something well. If we attempt to do something when our abilities are not at their peak, we flirt with disaster at this time.

No number holds more esoteric significance than “33.” The number three is significant in all major religions. There is a Trinity for Christians and a Triple Goddess for the ancients. The number 33 was important to secret societies and is often concealed within significant literary works. Numerology.

The Celts believed that everything happens in threes. The Triskele is an ancient Irish symbol, over 5,000 years old that stands for the unity of the three. In the case of Celts, this is the physical, mental and spiritual. It also symbolizes eternal life, the flow of nature, and spiritual growth.

At the Vatican, there are 32 archways on each side of the courtyard with a giant obelisk in the middle. The Pope’s cassock has 32 buttons and his head represents the 33rd. The United Nations flag shows the globe divided into 33 sections encircled by olive branches. The flag also happens to be blue just like the first 3 “blue degrees” of Masonry. 33 is the highest degree of Scottish Rite Freemasonry.

There are 13 degrees of York-Rite Masonry. Our measuring system originated in Masonic France in the 1790s which explains why 13 standard inches is equal to precisely 33 metric centimetres. The Grand Orient de France of Freemasonry was founded in 1733. Harry S. Truman, a 33 degree Mason, became 33rd President of the United States. In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany.

The Masonic Great Seal with the Latin “New World Order” was added to the dollar bill in 1933.  Walt Disney was a 33rd degree Freemason and Disneyland has a “Club 33.” During WWII 33rd degree Winston Churchill gave us the “V for Victory” two-finger salute which since the 60s became “Peace.” Before it stood for Victory or Peace, it was a symbol of the 33rd degree. There are 3 joints to the knuckle on two fingers making 33 then held apart like a V is about 33 degrees. Everything Changes At 33: Numerology.

“Significant though it was, the JFK assassination is only one among many calculated murders that have happened along, or close to, the 33rd Parallel. The number of murders of people of high position and key witnesses along the 33rd Parallel is significant.” – Day Williams, “Masons and Mystery at the 33rd Parallel”

33rd degree Mason Buzz Aldrin and son of a 33rd degree Mason Neil Armstrong Jr. supposedly performed a Masonic ceremony 33 minutes after arriving on the moon, held the Masonic flag, and took pictures of each other. 33rd degree Mason director James Cameron attended the Houston, Texas opening of his film ‘Titanic,’ which began playing at exactly 3:33 pm.

The first Temple of Solomon stood for 33 years before being pillaged. Jesus was crucified by the Roman government and died for 3 days at age 33. Jesus was crucified at Golgotha (place of the skull) at age 33 in the year 33 A.D. Alexander the Great also died at 33.  Pope John Paul Ist was murdered after being in power for only 33 days.

“The sun enters at the 30th degree but is not totally clear until the 33rd degree, as it is of a certain size also. This is why they said in the Bible that the ministry of Christ begins at 30 and finishes at 33. This reference would have been unmistakable to anyone aware of the secrets of astrology. The number is connected to the initiation of the ‘Sun’ of god not ‘Son,’ passing through the zodiac. This is why the Freemasonic lodges also utilize the number.” – Michael Tsarion, “Astrotheology and Sidereal Mythology”

In astrology, the sun officially transitions into a new sign of the zodiac at the 33rd degree (a concept well-known long before Christianity). In the Bible, God corresponds to 1/3 (33.3%) as seen in Revelation 12 (1+2=3), where the great red dragon is sweeping 1/3 of the stars from heaven. The human foot has 33 joints. The human spine has 33 vertebrae. The number of turns in a complete sequence of human DNA equals 33.

“In Spiritual Numerology, ’33’ symbolizes the highest spiritual conscious attainable by the human being.”-Elizabeth van Buren, “The Secret of the Illuminati” (161-2)

David Koresh, leader of the Branch Davidians at Waco Texas was killed by the US government at 33 years old near the 33rd parallel. The UFO Roswell crash in 1947 was also on the 33rd parallel. There were 33 victims in the suspicious Virginia Tech shootings in April 2007.  Also, ice begins to melt at 33 degrees.

Vertebrae: The spine has 33 stacked vertebrae (small bones) that form the spinal canal. The spinal canal is a tunnel that houses the spinal cord and nerves, protecting them from injury. Most vertebrae move to allow for a range of motion. The lowest vertebrae (sacrum and coccyx) are fused together and don’t move.
The spine has three normal curves: cervical, thoracic and lumbar.
There are seven cervical vertebrae in the neck, 12 thoracic vertebrae in the torso and five lumbar vertebrae in the lower back.
