The meaning of hexagram #10

This simple looking hexagram relates to circumstances that might be inherently risky. In most cases treading in dangerous places is inadvisable. At this time, however, there is very little danger. It is written in the ancient Book of Changes that "One steps on the tail of a tiger at his or her own risk" but the appearance of this hexagram suggests that right now such an act would be ignored (or even seen as playful). A more general reference here could be a mingling of people belonging to different social backgrounds. This sign is typically positive.

Trigram Gèn 艮, Keeping Still, the mountain

The name of the hexagram means on the one hand the right way of conducting oneself. Heaven, the father, is above, and the lake, the youngest daughter, is below. This shows the difference between high and low, upon which composure correct social conduct, depends. On the other hand, the word for the name of the hexagram, Treading, means literally treading upon (empiéter sur) something. The small and cheerful兌treads upon the large and strong乾. The direction of movement of the two primary trigrams is upward. The fact that the strong treads on the weak are not mentioned in the Book of Changes, because it is taken for granted. For the weak to take a stand against the strong is not dangerous here, because it happened in good humour兌and without presumption, so that the strong man is not irritated but takes it all in good part.

When beings are subjected to restraint the mores arise; hence there follows the hexagram of Conduct.

"Conduct as Usual"- A change in this line at the base of this hexagram is an indication that the best course of action at this time is the course that is most typically followed. While there are unknowns in the present situation, a familiarity with the tried and true looks especially helpful at this time.

"Perseverance of the Solitary Soul"- The path is long and difficult. A change in this line indicates that one who is removed from daily interaction, and quietly focuses on the task at hand will be successful. Being true to oneself is indicated here, along with a warning not to be distracted by social pressure.

"A One-Eyed Man Still Sees"- This changing line near the middle of the hexagram is a reminder that the capacity to do something adequately is very different from the capacity to succeed at doing something well. If we attempt to do something when our abilities are not at their peak, we flirt with disaster at this time.
