Gaston Lachaille, 1944 (Colette)

Gaston Lagaffe, 1957 (André Franquin). The character of Gaston Lagaffe ('Gomer Goof') is derived from stereotypes of the American beatnik, publicized from 1957. The success of the book On the Road (1957) by Jack Kerouac made known the Beat Generation, a radical movement of emancipation inspired by the mode of free and maverick life of jazz musicians, which was abruptly popularized and both mocked by the American mass media. Beatnik stereotypes included pacifism, refusal to work, nonconformity or even eccentricity, love of jazz and the bohemian life, and clothing stereotypes such as long hair, beret, sandals, and duffel. -coat, blue jeans and turtlenecks.
