usually used to transliterate अनुस्वार anu-svā́ra/अनुस्वार anusvara, a diacritic used in Indic scripts as a nasal consonant (or equivalents) into ṃ. Another lesser form is ṁ (m with dot above/Ṁ lower case ṁ).
