《道德經第七章》
                      ➥ 師 (20210831 Code = Mass/Entity's Energy)

天長地久。
天地所以能長且久者,以其不自生,故能長生。
是以聖人後其身而身先;外其身而身存。
非以其無私耶?故能成其私。

Dao De Ching Chapter Seven — Alan B.Taplow 7 SOFT ACTION

    The universe is everlasting.
Not existing for itself, but giving life to all,
    It endures forever.

    Thus, the Sage -
    - Remaining behind and in the background,
Finds himself ahead and in the foreground.
    - Staying detached,
Finds himself at one with all.
    - Being selfless,
    Attains fulfilment.

Dao De Ching Chapter Seven — Arthur Waley 7

Heaven is eternal, the Earth everlasting.
How come they be so?
It is because they do not foster their own lives;
That is why they live so long.
Therefore the Sage
Puts himself in the background, but is always to the fore.
Remains outside, but is always there.
Is it not just because he does not strive for any personal end
That all his personal ends are fulfilled?

Dao De Ching Chapter Seven — James Legge 7 (Sheathing the light)
Heaven is long-enduring and earth continues long. The reason why heaven and earth are able to endure and continue thus long is that they do not live of, or for, themselves. This is how they are able to continue and endure. Therefore the sage puts his own person last, and yet it is found in the foremost place; he treats his person as if it were foreign to him, and yet that person is preserved. Is it not because he has no personal and private ends, that therefore such ends are realised?

Isère/Ardèche
Rhône river & 45th parallel
The latitude of the 45th parallel — marked in red — lies halfway between the north pole and the equator.

The commune of Limony occupies, on the banks of the Rhône, the extreme northern tip of the Ardèche. Its territory is representative of the department, with its 7 km² straddling the shore of the Rhône and a half-wooded, half-cultivated plateau. There are also picturesque gorges, those of the Limony stream, which is capable, like the river of Ardèche, of having violent fits of temper. Limony sits at the very centre of the region ARA.
Limony serves as a municipal border with Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf and Maclas, but also as a departmental border with the Loire, and a regional border between Vivarais and Forez.
The Rhône, too, has had its whims, and in particular that of changing beds. The eastern limit of the town is thus found today on the left bank. This is the Île des Graviers, which is part of the Île de la Platière nature reserveSince the development of the Rhône and a parallel canal, the most serious floods have disappeared. However, some areas are theoretically prone to flooding. There are island names there: the Isle of Hasard, Isle of Government.

The town is crossed in the north-south direction by the departmental 86 and the railway line on the right bank of the Rhône, which bypasses the village to the east.
Hexagram 38 is named 睽 (kuí), "Polarising". Or "opposition" and "perversion".
  • Its inner trigram is ☱ (兌 duì) open = (澤) swamp.
  • Its outer trigram is ☲ (離 lí) radiance = (火) fire.
Hexagram 7 is named 師 (shī), "Leading". Or "the army" and "the troops".
  • Its inner (lower) trigram is ☵ (坎 kǎn) gorge = (水) water.
  • Its outer (upper) trigram is ☷ (坤 kūn) field = (地) earth.
Hexagram 睽 38 changing to hexagram 師 7 with a total of 3 changing lines.
In this transformation, both the upper and lower trigrams are transformed from 睽 38 to 師 7.
The 睽 38 hexagram implies a draw, an impasse or a stalemate. Like water and fire coming together, opposing forces bring activity to a standstill. The opposing forces I encounter may be the actions or opinions of others, or they may be my own. An internal struggle has brought me to a point where movement is impossible. This is a time to identify a higher vision for myself. Look to see who shares my vision and who does not, who is in alignment with my cause and who is not. This is an opportunity to evaluate and decide on directions for future movement. The first step in dealing with opposition is identifying it.
This hexagram is composed of the trigram 離 above, i.e., flame, which burns upward, and 兌 below, i.e., the lake, which seeps downward. These two movements are in direct contrast. Furthermore, 離 is the second daughter and 兌 the youngest daughter, and although they live in the same house they belong to different men; hence their wills are not the same but are divergently directed.
The conflict between III & VIII is due to the presence of V Le Pape.

The sequence:
When the way of the Family draws to an end, misunderstandings come. Hence there follows the hexagram of Opposition. Opposition means misunderstandings.

Miscellaneous notes:
Opposition means estrangement.

Appended judgments:
The men of ancient times strung a piece of wood for a bow and hardened pieces of wood in the fire for arrows. The use of bow and arrow is to keep the world in fear. They probably took this from the hexagram of Opposition.

The upper primary trigram 離 means weapons; the lower, 兌, is associated with the west, metal, and killing; hence the idea of bow and arrow to keep the world in fear and alarm. The correspondences between the lines are of great importance in this hexagram. In all the lines the situation is that of opposition; throughout, however, the tendency is toward smoothing out misunderstandings. This is why at the first line no search is made for the horse, which returns of its own accord, and why at the fourth line one meets a person of like mind. In the second place it is said, “One meets his lord,” and correspondingly at the fifth place, “The companion bites his way through the wrappings.” Again, the pronouncement at the third place, “Not a good beginning, but a good end,” is related to that at the topmost place: “As one goes, rainfalls.” This hexagram is the inverse of 家人, the preceding one.

the Judgment:
睽:小事吉。
Opposition. In small matters, good fortune.
➥ When people live in opposition and estrangement they cannot carry out a great undertaking in common; their points of view diverge too widely. In such circumstances one should above all not proceed brusquely, for that would only increase the existing opposition; instead, one should limit oneself to producing gradual effects in small matters. Here success can still be expected because the situation is such that the opposition does not preclude all agreement.
In general, opposition appears as an obstruction, but when it represents polarity within a comprehensive whole, it has also its useful and important functions. The oppositions of heaven and earth, spirit and nature, man and woman, when reconciled, bring about the creation and reproduction of life. In the world of visible things, the principle of opposites makes possible the differentiation by categories through which order is brought into the world.

Commentary on the Decision:
睽,火而上,澤動而下;二女同居,其志不同行;而麗乎明,柔故而說,得中而應乎剛;是小事,其事同。 志通也;萬物睽,而其事類也;睽之時用大矣哉!
Opposition: fire moves upward, the lake moves downward. Two daughters live together, but their minds are not directed to common concerns.
Joyousness and dependence upon clarity: the yielding progresses and goes upward, attains the middle and finds correspondence in the firm. This is why there is good fortune in small matters.
Heaven and earth are opposites, but their action is concerted. Man and woman are opposites, but they strive for a union. All beings stand in opposition to one another: what they do takes on order thereby. Great indeed is the effect of the time of Opposition.
➥ The name of the hexagram is derived from the relationships developing out of the movement of the two trigrams. Fire flames upward, water seeps downward: when they are quiescent, their movements can unite; when they are in motion, they draw farther and farther apart. The two daughters are originally together in the parental house. Their ways part as they grow up and marry into different families. Thus the movement leads more and more to the opposition. However, since this movement is a natural one, it comes of itself to a turning when it has reached an extreme.
The trigram 兌 has joyousness as an attribute; the trigram 離, dependence, upon clarity. Joyousness unites, clarity finds the right way for this. Furthermore, the relations of the two rulers of the hexagram are favourable, so that there is a possibility of success at least in small matters.
However, Confucius goes still further. He shows that opposition is actually the natural prerequisite for a union. As a result of opposition, a need to bridge it arises; this is true as regards heaven and earth, man and woman. Similarly, it is the individual differences between things that enable us to differentiate them clearly and hence to classify them. This is the effect of the phase of opposition - a phase that must be transcended.

the Image:
上火下澤,睽;君子以同而異。
Above, fire; below. The lake.
The image of Opposition.
Thus amid all fellowship
The superior man retains his individuality.
➥ The two elements, fire and water, never mingle but even when in contact retain their own natures. So the sutured man is never led into baseness or vulgarity through intercourse or community of interests with persons of another sort; regardless of all commingling, he will always preserve his individuality.

The changing lines between hexagram 睽 38 and hexagram 師 7
Changing line #1
初九:悔亡,喪馬勿追,自複;見惡人無咎。
Nine at the beginning means:
  • Remorse disappears.
  • If you lose your horse, do not run after it;
  • It will come back of its own accord.
  • When you see evil people,
  • Guard yourself against mistakes.
"Lesson of the Runaway Horse"
If one's horse runs off out of control, let it go and trust it will return on its own accord. This means that if I do not feel supported by somebody ― that my own will differs from a comrade's will ― I shall not attempt to force alignment. I shall accept that there is opposition right now and this person will join me later.

Changing line #4
九四:睽孤,遇元,交孚,厲無咎。
Nine in the fourth place means:
  • Isolated through opposition,
  • One meets a like-minded man
  • With whom one can associate in good faith.
  • Despite the danger, no blame.
"Dissolving Isolation"
When it seems as if you are stuck, and all those around you are in opposition to your journey, always look for the one wise person to meet with. There will still be at least one person in your circle of friends who will share your vision. Seek this person's counsel at this time.

Changing line #6
上九:睽孤,見豕負塗,載鬼一車,先張之弧,後說之弧,匪寇婚媾,往遇雨則吉。
Nine at the top means:
  • Isolated through opposition,
  • One sees one's companion as a pig covered with dirt,
  • As a wagon full of devils.
  • The first one draws a bow against him,
  • Then one lays the bow aside.
  • He is not a robber; he will woo at the right time.
  • As one goes, rain falls; then good fortune comes.
"Seeing Past a Dirty Face"
Comrades who share my commitment and vision could be hidden from view at this time. I shall show my own true colours first and my allies will then show theirs. The new people I meet at this time come in peace, no matter how it may seem at first.

師 the future hexagram 7:
"The Army" 🢥 I & X•Cॐ (I+XCṁ)

The meaning of 師 hexagram 7
Even with powerful allies and armies, no success is possible if leadership wavers. Good leadership requires public strength, but more importantly: private discipline. I shall remember to treat my allies well and support the greater good. Success at this time will be the result of strong interpersonal ties and dedicated personal discipline. To indulge one's ego or one's own personal ambitions will fail. A unified force will succeed. The importance of clear communication is also referenced here.
The hexagram 7 is made up of the trigrams 坎, water, and 坤 Kun, earth, and thus it symbolizes the groundwater stored up in the earth. In the same way, military strength is stored up in the mass of the people ― invisible in times of peace but always ready for use as a source of power. The attributes of the two trig rams are danger inside and obedience must prevail outside.
Of the individual lines, the one that controls the hexagram is the strong nine in the second place, to which the other lines, all yielding, are subordinate. This line indicates a commander because it stands in the middle of one of the two trigrams. But since it is in the lower rather than the upper trigram, it represents not the ruler but the efficient general, who maintains obedience in the army by his authority.

The sequence:
When there is conflict, the masses are sure to rise up. Hence there follows the hexagram of the Army. Army means mass.

Miscellaneous notes:
The Army means mourning.

the Judgment:
師:貞,丈人,吉無咎。
The Army. The army needs perseverance
And a strong man.
Good fortune without blame.
➥ An army is a mass that needs organization in order to become a fighting force. Without strict discipline, nothing can be accomplished, but this discipline must not be achieved by force. It requires a strong man who captures the hearts of the people and awakens their enthusiasm. In order that he may develop his abilities, he needs the complete confidence of his ruler, who must entrust him with full responsibility as long as the war lasts. But war is always a dangerous thing and brings with it destruction and devastation. Therefore it should not be resorted to rashly but, like a poisonous drug, should be used as a last recourse.

Commentary on the Decision:
師,眾也,貞正,能以眾正,可以王矣。而應,行險也,順毒天下,而之,剛中又何故民從矣。
The Army means the masses. Perseverance means discipline.
The man who can affect discipline through the masses may attain mastery of the world.
The strong one is central and finds response. One does a dangerous thing but finds devotion.
The man who thus leads the world is followed by the people.
Good fortune. How could this be a mistake?
➥ This hexagram consists of a mass of yielding lines in the midst of which, in a central although subordinate place, is a single strong line. As a general, not as a ruler, it holds the others under control. From this arises the idea of the mass (the many yielding lines) and of the army - a disciplined multitude. The firm line in the second place finds support, because of correspondence, in the yielding line in the fifth place, the place of the ruler. The danger of the action is indicated by the lower trigram, Kan, and devotion by the upper, Kun.

the Image:
地有水,師;君子以容民畜眾。
In the middle of the earth is water:
The image of the Army.
Thus the superior man increases his masses
By generosity toward the people.
➥ Groundwater is invisibly present within the earth. In the same way, the military power of a people is invisibly present in the masses.
When danger threatens, every peasant becomes present in the masses. When danger threatens, every peasant becomes a soldier; when the war ends, he goes back to his plough. He who is generous toward the people wins their love, and a people living under a mild rule becomes strong and powerful. Only a people economically strong can be important in military power. Such power must therefore be cultivated by improving the economic condition of the people and by humane government. Only when there is this invisible bond between government and people, so that the people are sheltered by their government as groundwater is sheltered by the earth, is it possible to wage a victorious war.

Transverse Waves Vs. Longitudinal Waves:

Nikola Tesla’s Discovery

By J.J.J.

In 1864, James Clerk Maxwell wrote a paper titled “A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field,” and put forth equations theorizing the unification of electric and magnetic fields which react to one another creating electromagnetic waves. His theory of electromagnetism proposed that these EM waves were transverse (waves that oscillate perpendicularly to the propagation of travel) and that there must be a medium in nature with solid properties or else these transverse waves would be impossible. It was proven prior to Maxwell by many scientists that transverse waves cannot travel through gas or water because there is no force preventing them from falling apart. The old theories stated that there must be a force perpendicular to the propagation of the wave which maintains its driving strength. This medium was considered the Ether.

It wasn’t until Oliver Heaviside came along in 1885 and noticed that Maxwell’s equations were inconsistent. Maxwell used multivariable/vector calculus which was almost impossible to understand, so Heaviside invented a new form of calculus to reduce Maxwell’s equations. With his new method, Heaviside was able to simplify Maxwell’s equations from 20 to just 4. These 4 equations are still set in stone today (and should technically be called Maxwell-Heaviside Equations).

In 1886, Heinrich Hertz experimentally investigated the existence of electromagnetic waves in order to prove Maxwell’s equations. He used a small spark gap transmitter powered by an oscillator and a new type of receiver, and when his generator was turned on there were sparks emitting in both his transmitter and his receiver. It was obvious that the transmitter must be sending the energy of some kind to the receiver. Hertz was able to measure the wavelength and also the speed of the waves which came out to be the speed of light. He also showed that similar to light, these waves could be reflected. To him, this was absolute proof of transverse EM waves, and with this demonstration, the scientific world turned the Maxwell-Heaviside Equations into laws.

Nikola Tesla caught the enthusiasm of Hertz’ findings and repeated Hertz’s experiments with a much improved and far more powerful apparatus. His new alternating current system of power transmission was already fully developed and with his newly created Tesla Coil, which produced high-voltage, low-current, high frequency alternating current electricity, he was able to progress far beyond the experiments of Hertz and others. Instead of using an electrical interrupter that generated a hundred cycles per second like Hertz, Tesla used 20,000 cycles from his alternator. During this experiment, Tesla noticed that when the sparks were generated, his Geissler tubes (gas discharge tubes similar to neon lighting) lying nearby would light up in unison with the sparks. Later he noticed that the tubes would not light up if they were held at right angles to the terminals of his induction coil. The only time they would light up is if they were parallel to the spark. With these observations, Tesla came to the conclusion that the effects Hertz observed were not due to electromagnetic waves, but were “electrostatic thrusts” (longitudinal waves that oscillate parallel with the propagation of travel instead of perpendicularly like transverse waves). If they were transverse EM waves, then the position of the tubes wouldn't have mattered. These observations convinced Tesla that Hertz and all others following his claims were misled because they chose to focus on Maxwell’s theory and failed to recognize that the phenomenon was actually caused by electrostatic effects.

In 1891, Tesla gave a lecture before the American Institute of Electrical Engineers at Columbia College and showcased his new discovery. He politely opposed the views of Hertz (and other scientists like physicist Oliver Lodge) and proposed that EM waves had little to no effect on the phenomenon of light production. Although he agreed that his apparatus gave off some EM waves, he theorized that they were blotted out after they had travelled a short distance from the transmitter. This, he assumed, was because, by the time their necessary frequency could be reached, the conductor would become opaque to the passage of the waves. The only reasonable explanation for the cause of the phenomenon was an electrostatic effect. Tesla then went on to demonstrate that these electrostatic waves could be used to light wireless light bulbs before a spell-bound audience.

In 1892, Tesla went to Germany to share his observations with Hertz but was met with great disappointment from the German physicist. Though, to Hertz’ credit, who wants to hear that they may have been wrong after making one of the greatest discoveries in the history of science.

This was an important part of Tesla’s life. He was literally at a crossroads in the history of energy transmission. Others chose to follow Maxwell’s path while Tesla chose to go in his own direction. He had discovered something that even Maxwell failed to predict. Tesla chose to progress with his new discovery of electrostatic energy, a discovery that even today we have yet to fully comprehend.

Throughout the mid-1890s, Tesla experimented with x-rays and the wireless transmission of energy sending signals as far as 30 miles, and always came to the same conclusions as he did in the early 1890s--that he was working with longitudinal waves and not transverse EM waves. Furthermore, in 1900, after evolving his Magnifying Transmitter which allowed him to produce EM activities of many millions of horse-power, Tesla made one last desperate attempt to prove that the disturbances coming from his oscillator were EM waves similar to light, but again failed to do so. This forced Tesla to question the validity of Maxwell’s theory.

Nikola Tesla came to a final conclusion that the EM waves used in the wireless transmission of energy, and all other electromagnetic radiation, are not transverse waves, but instead are waves similar to sound with longitudinal properties. Since Maxwell’s solid ether theory was incorrect, and it is well known that light is dependent on a medium that limits it to a constant velocity, Tesla believed that the medium must have gaseous properties with density and elastic force. In Tesla’s own words, “light cannot be anything else but a longitudinal disturbance in the ether, involving alternate compressions and rarefactions. In other words, light can be nothing else than a sound wave in the ether.”

“The history of science shows that theories are perishable. With every new truth that is revealed, we get a better understanding of Nature and our conceptions and views are modified. Dr Hertz did not discover a new principle. He merely gave material support to a hypothesis that had been long ago formulated. It was a perfectly well-established fact that a circuit, transverse by a periodic current, emitted some kind of space waves, but we were in ignorance as to their character. He apparently gave experimental proof that they were transversal vibrations in the ether. Most people look upon this as his great accomplishment. To my mind, it seems that his immortal merit was not so much in this as in the focusing of the investigator’s attention on the processes taking place in the ambient medium. The Hertz-wave theory, by its fascinating hold on the imagination, his stifled creative effort in the wireless art and retarded it for twenty-five years. But, on the other hand, it is impossible to over-estimate the beneficial effects of the powerful stimulus it has given in many directions.” NT- (“The True Wireless.” Electrical Experimenter, May 1919.)

The Maxwellian interpretation of EM waves is now generally accepted as a scientific fact, and even currently taught in most academic physics and engineering textbooks. However, Tesla’s work challenging this theory certainly warrants further study into this area. First, Tesla’s experiments were far more in-depth than his colleagues’ work, as well as utilizing more advanced equipment to conduct the experiments themselves. Secondly, he provided solid and sufficient empirical evidence concretely refuting Maxwell’s theory. Based on this, Tesla’s groundbreaking work should at a minimum be acknowledged in today’s world, and certainly further explored.

Alan Morrison, Valley of the Spirit

谷神不死,是謂玄牝。
玄牝之門,是謂天地根。
綿綿若存,用之不勤

Dao De jing Chapter Six ― Alan B. Taplow, 6 SPIRIT OF THE VALLEY

The spirit of the valley is
    Empty – Receptive – Eternal.
She is Yin – The Primal Mother.
At her door – the root of heaven and earth,
    Which is continuous, without end.

Taking it, using it, drawing upon it,
It serves eternally – without fail.

Dao De jing Chapter Six ― Arthur Waley

The Valley Spirit never dies.
It is named the Mysterious Female.
And the doorway of the Mysterious Female
Is the base from which Heaven and Earth sprang.
It is there within us all the while;
Draw upon it as you will, it never runs dry.

Ꜥnḫ
Life Tuning

In ancient Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, the ankh was a triliteral sign: one that represented a sequence of three consonant sounds. The ankh stood for the sequence Ꜥ-n-ḫ, where n is pronounced like the English letter n, Ꜥ is a voiced pharyngeal fricative, and ḫ is a voiceless or voiced velar fricative (sounds not found in English). In the Egyptian language, these consonants were found in the verb meaning "live", the noun meaning "life", and words derived from them, such as sꜤnḫ, which means "cause to live" or "nourish". The sign is known in English as the "ankh", based on the hypothetical pronunciation of the Egyptian word, or as the "key of life", based on its meaning.

One of the common uses of the word Ꜥnḫ was to express a wish that a particular person lives. For example, a phrase meaning something like "may you be healthy and alive" was used in polite contexts, similar to the English phrase "if you please", and the phrase Ꜥnḫ wḏꜣ snb, meaning "alive, sound, and healthy", was used as an honorific for the pharaoh when he was mentioned in writing. The Egyptian word for "oath" was also Ꜥnḫ because oaths in ancient Egypt began with a form of the word "live".

The same consonants were found in the word "mirror" and the word for a floral bouquet, so the sign was also used in writing these words. The three consonants also compose the word for a looped rope-like object found in illustrations on many coffins from the Middle Kingdom (c. 2050–1650 BC). The Egyptologists Battiscombe Gunn and Alan Gardiner, in the early 20th century, believed these objects to be sandal straps, given that they appear in pairs at the foot of the coffin and the accompanying texts say the objects are "on the ground under his feet"

Mt. Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines, with its frequent eruption producing mudslides, ash falls, and lava flows which have destructed several towns time and again. It has a perfect cone shape and it is best seen from the Cagsawa Ruins.

Local folklore says that Mt. Mayon is named after a legendary heroine called Daragang Magayon, which means “beautiful lady.”
"Make your home, your abode, where an angel would DESIRE to visit, where an angel would seek to be a guest."

《道德經第五章》

天地不仁,以萬物為芻狗;
聖人不仁,以百姓為芻狗。
天地之間,其猶橐籥乎?
虛而不屈,動而愈出。
多言數窮,不如守中。

Dao De jing Chapter Five ― Alan B. Taplow 5 NATURE

    Nature is impartial ―
While regarding All Things of the universe as sacred,
    Graces them with equality.
Likewise, the Sage is impartial ―
While regarding all creatures as sacred,
    Graces them with equality.

The universe ― a moving bellows ― Yin and Yang
    always emptying ― always full,
Endlessly working ― endlessly yielding forth.

Understanding the nature of the universe
    by words and by intellect,
    Leads to exhaustion.
Hold instead to that intuition which,
Rising from the gut of mankind,
    Resembles original nature.

Dao De jing Chapter Five ― James Legge (The use of emptiness)

Heaven and earth do not act from (the impulse of) any wish to be benevolent; they deal with all things as the dogs of grass are dealt with. The sages do not act from (any wish to be) benevolent; they deal with the people as the dogs of grass are dealt with. May not the space between heaven and earth be compared to a bellows?
'Tis emptied, yet it loses not its power;
'Tis moved again and sends forth air the more.
Much speech to swift exhaustion lead we see;
Your inner being guard, and keep it free.

Dao De jing Chapter Five ― Arthur Waley

Heaven and Earth are ruthless;
To them, the Ten Thousand things are but as straw dogs.
The Sage too is ruthless;
To him, the people are but as straw dogs.
Yet Heaven and Earth and all that lies between
Is like a bellows
In that it is empty, but gives a supply that never fails.
Work it, and more comes out.
Whereas the force of words is soon spent.
Far better is it to keep what is in the heart.
