复:亨。出入无疾,朋来无咎。反复其道,七日来复,利有攸往。

信言不美,美言不信。
善者不辯,辯者不善。
知者不博,博者不知。
聖人不積,既以為人己愈有,既以與人己愈多。
天之道,利而不害;聖人之道,為而不爭。

Words of truth are not high-sounding;
high-sounding words are not the truth.
One who has 德 does not argue;
one who argues does not have 德.
The truly wise do not know many things;
one who knows many things is not truly wise.

The truly wise do not selfishly crave.
They live for other people
and thereby grow richer.
They give freely of themselves
and thereby have great abundance.

The great 道 endows
but does so unconditionally.
The 道 of the wise accomplishes
but does so unselfishly.

81 (The manifestation of simplicity)

Sincere words are not fine; fine words are not sincere.
Those who are skilled (in 道) do not dispute (about it); the disputatious are not skilled in it.
Those who know (道) are not extensively learned; the extensively learned do not know it.
The sage does not accumulate (for himself).
The more that he expends for others, the more does he possess of his own; the more that he gives to others, the more does he have himself.
With all the sharpness of the Way of Heaven, it injures not; with all the doing in the way of the sage he does not strive.

True words are not fine-sounding;
Fine-sounding words are not true.
The good man does not prove by argument;
The one who proves by argument is not good.
True wisdom is different from much learning;
Much learning means little wisdom.
The Sage has no need to hoard;
When his own last scrap has been used up on behalf of others,
Lo, he has more than before!
When his own last scrap has been used up in giving to others,
Lo, his stock is even greater than before!
For heaven's way is to sharpen without cutting,
And Sage's way is to act without striving.

  • 鴻鈞老祖 "Ancestor of the Great Balance"  ancestor of 仙/仚/僊 ㄒㄧㄢ "transcendent human; celestial being; immortals" honorific name 鴻元老祖; ㄏㄨㄥˊㄩㄢˊ ㄌㄠˇ ˙ㄗㄨˇ, "Great Primal Ancestor" refer to as 玄玄上人 ㄒㄩㄢˊㄒㄩㄢˊ ㄕㄤˋㄖㄣˊ 『Mystery of Mysteries Saint』
  • The oldest recorded xiān character 僊 has a ㄒㄧㄢ ("rise up; ascend") phonetic supposedly because immortals could "ascend into the heavens". (Compare qiān 遷 "move; transfer; change" combining this phonetic and the motion radical.) The usual modern xiān character 仙, and its rare variant 仚, have a ㄕㄢ (山 "mountain") phonetic. In a character analysis, Kristofer Schipper interprets 仙 as "'the human being of the mountain,' or alternatively, 'human mountain'. The two explanations are appropriate to these beings: they haunt the holy mountains, while also embodying nature."
  • 鴻鈞 graphic variant of 洪鈞 ㄏㄨㄥˊ ㄐㄩㄣ, "primordial nature" as in 先有鸿钧后有天 "First there was 洪鈞 and then there was Heaven" as 鸿元 or 洪元 is a cosmological term for "the universe before the separation of heaven and earth".
  • 《爾雅·釋天》記述:「夏曰歲,商曰祀,周曰年。」這說明「年」字是從周朝開始。以文字學角度來看,年的造字以「禾」及「千」兩個字組成的,與動物無關。《說文解字·禾部》:「年,穀熟也。從禾千聲。春秋傳曰大有年。」這裡的「年」有豐收的意思。
