The founder of that spiritual technique 臼井甕男, Usui Mikao was raised as 武士 a samurai from childhood, specifically in the martial arts techniques of 合氣術 Aiki and was influenced by the practice of 修験道, lit. the "Way [of] Trial [&] Practice" a highly syncretic Buddhist religion or sect and mystical-spiritual tradition which originated in pre-Feudal Japan, in which enlightenment is equated with attaining oneness with 神 the kami. Practitioners are called やまぶし • (yamabushi) 山伏(mountain [ascetic] hermit, lit. "one who prostrates himself on the mountain").
