The pull that narrows and eventually closes the gap between מַיִם  (máyim)
Cancer and Capricorn symbolise contrasting approaches of the return process, the self-parenting of the inner-child. Luni-earthly Cancer represents the mothering, nurturing and keeping togetherness side while Capricorn represents the fathering, keeping the ranks, following the march order side of personality (horoscope perse, always involves both signs, regardless of natal planetary placement).

Cancer's types of energy root value in emotional safety and comfort, above all else and will rush to rescue when hurt or loneliness is felt. It will mobilize whatever it takes in order to (re)establish comfort and love (often drawing from the experience of what has worked in the past to determine and heal the roots of emotional discomfort). Cancer's realm is the abdomen. As such it is determinant in the process of self-actualisation.

Capricorn values discipline, self-sufficiency, more than emotional comfort. Emotional vulnerability is disregarded, and might even be considered to be weak. Instead, the energies of the Capricorn tend more to let a character become stronger and more skilled so to take better care.

These two contrasting approaches complement one another: too much Cancer and too little Capricorn, for instance, might mean indulging in overreacting whenever lonely.  On the other hand, too much Capricorn and too little Cancer may result in workaholic or martyr-like behaviours with constant exhaustion due to poor care of the self.

Cancer-Capricorn Archetypes
Opposing signs need each other to successfully achieve their core purpose.
One of the core purposes of the Cancer-Capricorn pair is nurturing and growth.
There can be no true nurturing without discipline.
Goals and ambition need to be tempered with self-care.
Emotional security pairs with its financial counterpart.

Cancer. Significant in regard to Cancer is the sacrifice of the ram of the New Year at Cos in the house of Eurypylus. The character's name, which means "of the wide doors," refers to the solstitial gateways. The punishment of Hera and Hephaestus, who are associated with him, is an allusion to the equivalent axis in the Delian system.

At Cos, Heracles was honoured as a god of marriage. The rite of transvestism known to have been celebrated there must have been associated with the summer solstice and Cancer, the lunar sign. The change of season was interpreted as a change of sex; the decreasing days marked the beginning of the feminine half of the year.

Capricorn. The episode of Hylas is connected with Cios on the coast of Mysia and with Capricorn in the Sardis system. It was in this area, according to Strabo, that some situated the myth of Typhon, another reference to the Cancer-Capricorn axis.

Of such a system at least two axes can be found:
l. A Taurus-Eagle axis (island of Erythea-eagle of Prometheus).
2. A north-south or Cancer-Capricorn axis.
With to the north: Atlas or else the Ceryneian Hind in Istria.
And to the south: Antaeopolis in Lybia.

In the speculations of the Gnostics, the astronomical points Cancer and Capricorn are called the 'Gates of the Sun'. Cancer, moreover, is termed the 'Gate of Man'; Capricorn is the 'Gate of the Gods'. These are Platonic views, as Macrobius declares. With the influences of the planets, Saturn brings reason and intelligence; Jupiter, power of action; Mars governs the irascible principle, the Sun produces sensation and speculation, Venus inspires the appetites, Mercury bestows the power of declaring and expressing, and the Moon confers the faculty of generating and augmenting the body. The Egyptian 'winged disc' is a symbol of 'Tat', Taut', or 'Thoth' (Plutarch, De Iside et Osiride). The lions’ heads, so frequently observable, in the sculptures decorating fountains, bespeak the astral influences under Leo, which produce the rains in the ardent month of July; and in this view, they are regarded as the discharges of the 'sacred fountains'. Lions’ heads, with fountains, are observable in architecture all the world over. All architecture is primarily derivable from two mathematical lines (| and --), which, united (and intersecting), form the 'cross'. The first 'mark' is the origin of the 'upright' tower, pyramid, or imitation ascending 'flame of fire', which aspires against the force of gravity; also of the steeple, or phallus, all over the world. The second, or horizontal, 'mark' is the symbol of the tabernacle, chest or ark, or fluent or base-line, which is the expression of all Egyptian, Grecian, and Jewish templar architecture. The union of the two lines gives the Christian, universal cross-form, in the blending of the 'two dispensations'--Old and New, or 'Law' and 'Gospel'. Now, both of these lines, in the Rosicrucian sense, have special magic 'powers', or gifts, according to their several places, and according to the 'supernatural extra forces brought' specially to bear on them through the operations of those who know how (and when) to direct the occult power.

Those powers bestowed upon the original deserving 'Man', and not extinguished in the existing 'Man', are his still--if he retains any glimpse of his original spark of light.
