  • The tree of life (עֵץ הַחַיִּים, ‘ēṣ haḥayyīm) first described in the Book of Genesis, chapter 2, verse 9 as being "in the midst of the Garden of Eden" (גַּן־עֵדֶן, gan-ʿĒḏen) — or Garden of God (גַּן־יְהֹוָה, gan-YHWH), also called the Terrestrial Paradise, the biblical paradise described in Genesis 2-3 and Ezekiel 28 and 31 — with the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Hebrew: עֵץ הַדַּעַת טוֹב וָרָע). עץ החיים tree of Life (קַבָּלָה Qabālā, literally "reception, tradition" or "correspondence," set of esoteric teachings meant to explain the relationship between the unchanging, eternal God—the mysterious אֵין סוֹף‎, Ein Sof "The Infinite" — and the mortal, finite universe, God's creation).
  • The tree of the knowledge of good and evil (עֵ֕ץ הַדַּ֖עַת ט֥וֹב וָרָֽע; ʿêṣ had-daʿaṯ ṭōḇ wā-rāʿ, [ʕesˤ hadaʕaθ tˤov wɔrɔʕ]) is one of two specific trees in the story of the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2–3, along with the tree of life.

Alternatively, some scholars have argued that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is just another name for the tree of life. Such has Karl Budde, in his critical study of 1883, who proposed that there was only one tree in the body of the Genesis narrative and that it had been portrayed in two ways:
  • one as the tree in the middle of the Garden,
  • and two as the forbidden tree.
Claus Westermann gave recognition to Karl Budde's theory in 1976.

神秀偈

身是菩提樹,心如明鏡臺。時時勤拂拭,勿使惹塵埃。
The body is the bodhi tree.
The mind is like a bright mirror's stand.
At all times we must strive to polish it
and must not let dust collect.

The body is the tree of enlightenment,
The mind is like a bright mirror’s stand;
Time after time polish it diligently,
So that no dust can collect.

心是菩提樹,身為明鏡臺。明鏡本清淨,何處染塵埃。
The mind is the bodhi tree.
The body is the bright mirror's stand.
The bright mirror is originally clear and pure.
Where could there be any dust?


惠能偈

菩提本無樹,明鏡亦非臺。本來無一物,何處惹塵埃。
Bodhi originally has no tree.
The bright mirror also has no stand.
Fundamentally there is not a single thing.
Where could dust arise?

Enlightenment is not a tree,
The bright mirror has no stand;
Originally there is not one thing 
What place could there be for dust?

菩提本無樹,明鏡亦無臺。佛性常清淨,何處有塵埃。
Bodhi originally has no tree.
The mirror has no stand.
The Buddha-nature is always clear and pure.
Where is there room for dust?
